South Pacific speakers urge Australia to broaden development assistance

At the 2019 Australian Council for International Development conference, speakers from churches and businesses across the South Pacific region emphasized the need for more Pacific voices to be heard by Australia.

Keynote speaker Enele Sopoaga, former prime minister of Tuvalu, was directly critical of Australia’s offer of climate change funding at the recent Pacific Islands Forum. Australia had offered US$344 million (A$500 million) towards climate protection, but this was to have come from Australia’s existing development assistance budget, requiring reductions in other Pacific programs.
