Development NGOs and contractors call for a review of Australia’s development program following upcoming federal election

The Australian Council for International Development (ACFID), Australia's umbrella organization for non-governmental organizations (NGOs), has called for an independent review of Australia’s development program, following the outcome of the federal election on May 18, 2019. The International Development Contractors Community, the main body for contractors working in development, have joined the call for this  review.

ACFID has put forward a five-point policy platform for the next Australian government, which includes the independent review and establishment of a time frame for increasing official development assistance (ODA) funding. ACFID calls for a schedule of no more than five years for increasing Australia’s funding for development cooperation to at least 0.5 per cent of gross national income (GNI). In 2018, Australia's ODA/GNI ratio was 0.23%.
