Canada will provide funding for Ethiopia's 2020 electoral infrastructure

Canada's minister of foreign affairs, Chrystia Freeland, announced that Canada will provide US$0.8 million to assist Ethiopia's 2020 elections. This funding, to be administered by The United Nations Development Programme, is a part of Canada's US$8 million fund for the promotion and protection of democracy which was established during the Global Conference for Media Freedom in July 2019.

The funding should increase the capacity of Ethiopia’s electoral management to allow for voter registration and post-electoral support, transparent elections, and increased public trust in the election process through voter education. There will be a specific focus on including women, youth, and ethnic groups in all regions of the country in the electoral process.
