European political and civil society leaders call for a strengthened common EU foreign policy

Current and former political and civil society leaders across Europe have signed a letter calling on the recently elected EU leadership team to revitalize its approach to foreign policy when it takes office. The sixty-four signatories described Europe's critical role in the world and called for stronger links to be established between EU institutions and national governments in foreign policy development. The signatories also called for strengthening relations with the United States and for fostering deeper engagement on policy matters relating to China, Russia, the Middle East, and the Balkans. 
Signatories included: 

  • Douglas Alexander - chair of Unicef UK and former UK secretary of state for international development; 
  • Carl Bildt - co-chair of the Board of ECFR, former prime minister of Sweden, former foreign minister;
  • Fabienne Hara - special adviser to European donor government relations at Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation;
  • Javier Solana - former EU high representative for the common foreign and security policy and secretary-general of the Council of the EU, former secretary-general of NATO.
