France recommits to reaching 0.55% GNI as ODA
French Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jean-Yves Le Drian, renewed France's commitment to increase French development assistance to reach 0.55% of GNI by 2022. During his speech at the annual Ambassadors' Conference, Le Drian expressed the following key points:
- The French bilateral agency, AFD, will benefit from a €1.5 billion (US$1.6 billion) authorization for forthcoming expenses in the next budget;
- The bilateral channel will be prioritized, allowing the AFD to increase the volume of grants to 18 priority countries;
- An increase of €100 million (US$110 million) for humanitarian assistance will be adopted as soon as next year; and
- A €130 million (US$143 million) increase of the budget line led by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been proposed in the 2020 budget law.
