South Korea approves humanitarian assistance of US$8 million to North Korea in wake of major food shortages
The South Korean government has approved the donation of US$8 million in humanitarian assitance to North Korea. The funding will be moved indirectly via UN agencies, and is being deployed in light of major food shortages due to an especially poor harvest and sweeping global sanctions.
Since South Korea’s support to North Korea does not constitute official development assistance, the funds will be administered by the Korean Ministry of Unification. US$4.5 million will be provided to the World Food Programme and the rest to UNICEF for their humanitarian assistance projects supporting nutrition for children and pregnant women in North Korea.
