Spain makes a bid for EU's high representative for foreign affairs position with Josep Borrell as candidate

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is battling for greater influence in the EU with a bid to place outgoing minister of foreign affairs, Josep Borrell (recently elected as a member of the European Parliament) as the new High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. The appointment would displace Italian Federica Mogherini, who currently holds the title.

The current Spanish minister of ecological transition, Teresa Ribera, may also have entered into the competition for appointment as Vice-President of the European Commission in charge of energy and climate change.
