Spanish development experts call for multilateral response against COVID-19

In an op-ed published by the Spanish newspaper El País, José Antonio Alonso (professor of economics at the Madrid Complutense University and member of the United Nations Committee for Development Policy) and Jaime Atienza (head of development financing at the development NGO - Oxfam Intermón) called for a multilateral response to address COVID-19 crisis globally, particularly among the most vulnerable populations in low-income countries. Alonso and Atienza underlined the importance of maintaining increasing development assistance and stressed on the need for coordinated action in the United Nations and the G20.

In addition, Iliana Olivié, senior analyst at the foreign affairs think tank Elcano Royal Institute,  published an article analyzing the potential impact of COVID-19 on the international development system. Olivié highlighted the importance of development assistance and multilateralism as potential instruments for addressing the current crisis and underlined global health as a public and global good.
