Sweden adopts new development cooperation strategy with Tanzania

On February 1, 2020, Sweden adopted a new five-year strategy for its development cooperation with Tanzania. Taking into account the recent negative democratic developments in Tanzania, Sweden has reduced its overall funding envelope for the country and revised the focus of its strategy, concentrating more on areas such as human rights, democracy, and gender equality, as well as climate and environment.

Sweden will, however, continue its support for education, focusing mainly on girls and young mothers, and promoting women’s economic and political empowerment, particularly focusing on sexual and reproductive health and rights.

Sweden’s new development cooperation strategy for Tanzania amounts to SEK 3 billion (US$318 million) for the period 2020-2024.
