UK 'mutual prosperity' development assistance strategy risks diluting poverty-focus

The UK’s development assistance watchdog, the Independent Commission on Aid Impact (ICAI), has warned the government that its shift in strategy to ensure development assistance delivers benefits for both partner countries and UK trade and investment interests, comes with risks of diluting the poverty-focus of the assistance.

In a new report, ICAI finds that while the UK government's mutual prosperity approach to development assistance can deliver real win-wins, it also has the potential to re-direct UK  asistance away from countries that need it the most. They said that the approach risks diverting UK resources to countries that are 'most likely to be important trading partners' at the expense of other effective development interventions.
