Canada's foreign minister visits Ukraine following recent presidential elections

Canada's foreign minister, Chrystia Freeland, visited Ukraine to meet with president-elect Volodymyr Zelenskiy to discuss Ukraine's recent presidential elections and offer Canada's full support throughout their democratic transition. Canada's election observation mission concluded that Ukraine held a free and fair election. Freeland credited outgoing president Petro Poroshenko for the progress achieved by Ukraine under his leadership, and for his commitment to a smooth transition of power.

In meetings with Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin, Freeland expressed Canada’s continued support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and commitment to working with the international community to maintain pressure on Russia.

Canada is hosting the Ukraine Reform Conference (July 2-4, 2019 in Toronto, Ontario). The goal of the Conference is to provide an opportunity for Ukraine and international partners to drive Ukraine’s reform agenda forward.
