President Trump reinstates Mexico City Policy prohibiting all foreign NGOs that receive US funding from providing abortions or offering information
US President Donald Trump has reinstated the Mexico City Policy, or ‘global gag rule’, requiring foreign non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to affirm that they will not “perform or actively promote abortion as a method of family planning” with funds from any source (including non-US funds) as a condition for receiving US global health assistance. This is both a reversal of former President Obama’s policy and an expansion of previous gag rules, as it makes the rule a condition not just for family planning funding but for any health assistance. The US is the largest bilateral donor to reproductive rights worldwide, and the extent to which the gag rule will affect wider global health funding is still unclear. Women’s rights and health advocates argue this policy reversal will result in a rise of unsafe abortions around the world.
