EU submits proposal to WTO for trade policy response alternatives to COVID-19 medical tools intellectual property waiver

The European Commission sent a proposal to the World Trade Organization (WTO) for trade policy responses to the COVID-19 pandemic as alternatives to a COVID-19 vaccine intellectual property waiver pitched by India and South Africa.

The Commission’s proposal calls for boosting manufacturing capacity for COVID-19-related medical tools, limiting export restrictions to avoid supply chain disruptions, and helping to enable the use of the already existing compulsory licensing provisions in the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS).

The EU calls for these proposed actions to be reflected in a WTO Declaration for members to urgently adopt.
