Spanish leadership prioritizes Sahel region in new development cooperation bill

From May 31 - June 2, 2022, Queen Letizia of Spain traveled to Mauritania, accompanied by the State Secretary for International Cooperation Pilar Cancela, to visit development programs supported by Spanish development cooperation in global health, democratic governance, gender equality, rural development, and nutrition.

Mauritania is among the largest country recipients of Spain’s ODA. As reflected in the new bill, ‘Cooperation for Sustainable Development and Global Solidarity’, which was presented to the parliament last week. The Sahel region is outlined among the top geographic priorities for Spain’s development policy for the first time in history.
