US Senate confirms new Office of Management and Budget director

The US Senate has confirmed Russell Vought to be the new director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), following a year in which he served in that position in an acting capacity.

Director Vought's tenure as acting head of OMB has been controversial, drawing the ire of both parties for his role in both Congressional oversight and attempts that many believed illegal to rescind billions in US foreign assistance. Vought refused Congressional subpoenas about the freezing of aid to Ukraine, which became the basis for impeachment proceedings against President Trump. OMB has played an outsized role in the administration's efforts to make significant cuts to US foreign assistance, efforts that have been largely unsuccessful with the US Congress.
