The Department for International Development (DFID) has announced that the UK government will match the first £5 million in public donations to the Disasters Emergency Committee’s (DEC) new East Africa Crisis Appeal. The DEC is an umbrella organization that brings 13 leading UK aid charities together in times of crisis to launch appeals and ensure that funds reach those who need them most.
Pledging to magnify the impact of private donations through public funds, the Secretary of State for International Development, Priti Patel, has urged the public to act swiftly in the face of widespread hunger compounded by crises of lack of clean water and medical supplies in East Africa. Severe drought has left 16 million people hungry across Somalia, South Sudan, and parts of Ethiopia and Kenya.
Japan will provide US$26 million in emergency assistance to combat famine in the Middle East and Africa. In response to a UN call for relief, Japan will channel its grant through six international organizations, including the WFP, with the aim of providing humanitarian assistance in food, nutrition, health, and water and sanitation to six countries: Somalia, South Sudan, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Yemen and Kenya.
The 58th Annual Meeting of the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB) and the 32nd Annual Meeting of the Inter-American Investment Corporation takes place in Ascunción, Paraguay. This official gathering is a forum for discussion among the institutions' Governors, many of whom are finance ministers of the regional and non-regional member countries, central bank presidents, and advisors. Representatives from multilateral financial institutions, development agencies, and commercial and investment banks are also invited to attend.

Held every 2-4 years by the World Federation of Public Health Associations (WFPHA), the 15th World Congress on Public Health (WCPH) is being hosted in the City of Melbourne, Australia, this coming April 3-7, 2017. The congress is intended as a forum for exchange of knowledge and experience on public health issues on the local, regional, national and global levels, including through the promotion of equality, the Sustainable Development Goals, and supporting the next generation of public health leaders. The event attracts between 2,000-4,000 delegates every year and will coincide with World Health Day on April 7, 2017. This year also commemorates the 50th anniversary of the WFPHA.
