The EU will provide €268 million (US$303 million) to support new projects in education, health, nutrition, clean water, sanitation, education, and income generation for the Afghan people in response to the acute humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan.
The funding will be channeled through UN agencies working in Afghanistan and will target support to women and girls in particular. Examples of projects include:
- €50 million (US$57 million) in support to public teachers to enable the continuation of education for children during conflict;
- €10 million (US$11 million) for COVID-19 response through testing, surveillance, and hospital facilities; and
- €25 million (US$28 million) for polio eradication, including vaccine procurement.
These projects are part of the €1 billion (US$1.1 billion) EU support package that European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced in October of 2021.
