EU must rethink development approach due to loss of credibility with global partners, argues European Think Tanks Group

According to a new report from the European Think Tanks Group (ETTG), the EU should rethink its approach as a global development actor as it has lost credibility and trust with global partners. This is especially the case in African countries, which perceive the EU as not keeping its promises and frequently promoting double standards.

The ETTG report also identified other challenges for EU development policy, including lack of coordination and coherence, communications failures at local and international levels, and the need for greater capacity in partner countries for understanding and working with local partners.

The report called on the EU to find more effective internal coordination mechanisms, increase consultations with external partners, address who will bear the transaction costs of increased coordination, and engage with non-traditional actors in EU partner countries.
