Pacific Island Forum declares climate emergency; Australia improves emissions reduction target

The Pacific Islands Forum leaders called for dramatic reductions in greenhouse emissions and declared a “climate emergency “in its recent leaders’ meeting. 

Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Pacific leaders commended Australia for stronger climate commitments. The new Australian government announced a 43% target reduction in carbon emissions by 2030. This could be enshrined in legislation in the coming months.

Australia’s suggestion of holding COP29 in the Pacific was welcomed in the communiqué from the meeting.
