USAID Bureau for Global Health lead confirmed by US Senate

Amidst a flurry of last-minute confirmations, the US Senate confirmed Dr. Atul Gawande as the Assistant Secretary for the Global Health Bureau at the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Gawande is a surgeon, public health expert, and professor at Harvard's T.H. Chan School of Public Health. He has authored four books and was a staff writer for the New Yorker. Gawande also served on US President Joe Biden's advisory committee on COVID-19 during the transition.  

As head of the global health bureau, Gawande will oversee efforts by USAID to combat child and maternal deaths, address efforts to control HIV/AIDS, and combat infectious diseases, including COVID-19.
